Kekkaishi
Kekkaishi (結界師?, lit. "Barrier Master") is an ongoing supernatural manga series by Yellow Tanabe. It is serialized in Japan by Shogakukan in the manga magazine Shōnen Sunday, and licensed for an English release in North America by Viz Media. It was adapted as a fifty-two episode anime series by Sunrise, which was broadcast between October 2006 and February 2008. The series is about Yoshimori Sumimura and Tokine Yukimura, heirs to rival families of kekkai (barrier magic) users, who must defend their school from the spirits drawn to the sacred land upon which it is built. Kekkaishi received the 2007 Shogakukan Manga Award for shōnen manga.
According to the legend, five hundred years ago, there was an insignificant lord who possessed a mysterious power; this power draws ayakashi (supernatural creatures) to him. A demon exterminator, Tokimori Hazama, was called upon to protect the lord and the castle. The lord's power stays on the land even when he had died. Thus, Tokimori founded the Hazama clan, who inherits his techniques, to protect the land for centuries to come. This land is Karasumori.
In the present day, Yoshimori Sumimura and Tokine Yukimura, heirs of the Hazama clan, are the kekkaishi that protect Karasumori. They are ability users (people who can use supernatural powers) who use a technique called Kekkai. Kekkai is a form of magical energy barrier which is primarily used to capture and destroy ayakashi that are drawn to this shinyuuchi (sacred land). Yoshimori has used an ingenious alternative to plain barriers by creating boxes of energy which can be used tactically as weapons or for making airborne stair steps. Any ayakashi that stay on the land become stronger. Yoshimori and Tokine are to guard the land from the intrusion of ayakashi who intend to power up there.
Yoshimori and Tokine suffered a lot of hardships in their responsibilities to protect Karasumori. The ayakashi they must fight are becoming more and more powerful, but they managed to protect the land with the help from Yoshimori's older brother, Masamori Sumimura, and Urakai. Urakai itself is an organization of ability users that is governed by a council of twelve, consisting of high level ability users.
Later, it's revealed little by little that the legend is full of lies. The real cause of the ayakashi power up is Chuusinmaru, an illegitimate son of the Hazama clan's founder, Tokimori Hazama, with the Karasumori clan's heiress who was named Tsukikage. Tokimori used forbidden arts to grant his son unearthly power, hoping that his son would grow into a great man who could conquer the world. However, the plan backfired, as Chuusinmaru was granted a power to draw people's life force, killing everybody. Tokimori has no choice but to seal his own son, who has become a too powerful and dangerous existence, in the Karasumori land, but the seal isn't perfect, as Chuusinmaru's power still leaks out, powering up ayakashi who stay at the land.
Kekkaishi was adapted by Sunrise as an anime television series directed by Kenji Kodama with character designs by Hirotoshi Takaya and music by Taku Iwasaki. The opening theme for all episodes is "Sha La La (Ayakashi Night)" (Sha la la -アヤカシNIGHT-?, "Sha La La (Mysterious Night)") by Saeka Uura. There are four different ending themes: "Akai Ito" (赤い糸?, "Red Thread") by Koshi Inaba (episodes 1-15, 38, 40), "Sekaijū Doko o Sagashite mo" (世界中どこを探しても?, "Looking for Another World") by Aiko Kitahara (episodes 16-23, 39, 44), "My Mirai" (マイミライ, Mai Mirai?) "My Future" by Saeka Uura (episodes 24-30, 41), and "Kyūkei Jikan Jūpun" (休憩時間10分?, "10 Minute Break") by Saeka Uura (episodes 31-37, 42-43, 45). The series was broadcast for 52 episodes in Japan between 16 October 2006 and 12 February 2008 on Nippon Television, Yomiuri TV, and Nippon Television Network System, in the "golden" timeslot of 7 p.m. Monday.[12]
The anime has been licensed in North America by Viz Media.[13] which began broadcasting episodes online through Hulu.com in January 2010.[14] The series premiered on TV on May 29, 2010 on Cartoon Network's block Adult Swim.[15] It has also been broadcast in Taiwan on TTV and Videoland Television Network, in Malaysia on 8TV (Cantonese dubbing with Malay subtitles) and NTV7 (Malay dubbing), in Hong Kong on Cable TV, in the Philippines on Hero and GMA-7, and in Indonesia on antv.

Madarao (斄旜) is Yoshimori's demon dog. He has a rivalry with Tokine's demon dog Hakubi, but is the more experienced of the two.
Madarao's fur is snow white; his eyes are pale green with a light green color for the pupil. Two thin black circles surround his pupil. He displayed noticeable features, such as the black outline around his mouth, which contain his jagged, sharp teeth. In addition, on his tail he has three gray circles surrounded by a dot. He wears a purple "collar" that is designed to seal away his true form. Pink clouds follow him to indicate that he is an ayakashi. Normally, his body is much like a snake; a head, body, and no legs, but at certain times, two front legs appear, which he uses to "run" in the air. In his released form, he grows ten times bigger and two front legs and two hind legs. He takes the form of his former self: a demon-wolf. His circles remain intact on his back and tail.
Madarao is an aggressive, yet lazy, demon dog. He puts his life before his allies, mainly Yoshimori, and is a very powerful being by himself. He enjoys eating smaller ayakashi, insulting Hakubi (and the Yukimura's), (playfully) scolding or teasing Yoshimori, and sleeping. Madarao has stated numerous times that he "fell in love" with Tokimori Hazama, and that "love knows no gender or species".[1] Whatever his true feelings are, Madarao's devotion to Tokimori is absolute. He also has a somewhat comical side, as after Yoshimori placed his seal collar, he asked for deer meat "before I die". Madarao wanting deer meat quickly becomes a running gag in the series. Shigemori Sumimura values Madarao's opinion, and occasionally has him evaluate Yoshimori's progress.[2]
Madarao grew up on a mountain with Kouya, his childhood friend. They both grew up as wild mountain dogs, though Madarao went by Ginro (嬧業) at the time[1] They enjoyed hunting until humans over-hunted their prey and only food source, which made the mountain into a barren, desolate rock. Madarao chose to leave, accompanied by a reluctant Kouya, but every other place they visited in hopes of survival were the same, which led to Madarao starving to death. This sent Kouya into a blind rage, and he was killed while attacking a human soldier. Madarao went back to his birthplace as a demon dog, and seeing Kouya had met the same fate, they stayed on the barren mountain. Kouya had become far more aggressive, especially towards humans, which later led Tokimori Hazama and a then living Hakubi to the mountain, intending to destroy them. Madarao willingly chose to serve Tokimori, but asked that Kouya be released.[1] At some point, Madarao promised to aid the Sumimura Clan at Tokimori's request (Hakubi doing the same with the Yukimura Family), and has remained with them ever since. Though he still considers Tokimori his true master, Madarao takes a certain amount of pride in his association with the family, having lived with them longer than he had Kouya.
Sense of Smell: As a demon dog, Madarao has an extremely high sense of smell that he uses to find the ayakashi Yoshimori needs to destroy. Apparently, his sense of smell is so great, he can tell if someone has special powers, as he was able to tell that Yurina Kanda was able to see Ayakashi.
Regeneration: If Madarao takes too much damage or is somehow destroyed, he will automatically return to his doghouse, where his true body is stored, and awaken when fully regenerated.[3] Both Madarao and Hakubi were bound to Karasumori because their true bodies remained in the care of their families, and the dogs could only travel so far from them.[4] However, this is no longer true for Madarao: the shikigami of Sumiko Sumimura removed Madarao's true body (in orb form) from the rock kept in his doghouse, so that he could accompany her and Yoshimori while they relocate Chushinmaru.[5]
Illusions: In his fight with Kouya, Madarao used his illusions to distract him so he could inject Kouya's body with
Poison: He injected a powerful poison into Kouya, and covered it up with an anesthetic to make sure he doesn't notice so it'll have time to work.[6] The Silver Rain he used also acted like a needle, injecting poison into Kouya using only one of the shards that stuck into Kouya's shoulder. [6]
Silver shards/ Silver Rain: He whips his tail forward, facing Kouya, and shoots out a massive stream of sharp, silver shards.[1]
Hakubi
Hakubi (敀旜) is Tokine's demon dog. He has served the Yukimura family for centuries. He loves to insult Yoshimori and Madarao. He affectionately calls Tokine 'honey'.
Hakubi has blue eyes and black fur. Light blue clouds follow him. He wears a green seal as a collar.

Hakubi is more easygoing than his opposite Madarao, and derisive to Yoshimori Sumimura. Hakubi is usually serious on the job and will quickly focus on the matter at hand if an Ayakashi turns out to be dangerous. Hakubi's personality can sometimes reflect on Tokine herself. He does care about Tokine's protection, and will always try to help her when she needs it. Hakubi also has a weakness for attractive women, and becomes very distracted when one is present.
Nothing is known about Hakubi's past before he began serving Tokimori Hazama. Hakubi was both present and still alive when Tokimori first met Madarao (who was still known as Ginro at the time) and Kouya.[1] Hakubi originally died when he was consumed by a stream of dark power that Chushinmaru accidentally released as a baby.[2] He stated that if demons got too close to Karasumori he would eat them ("destroy" in the English Dub of the anime).
Sense of Smell: As a demon dog, Hakubi has an extremely high sense of smell that he uses to find the ayakashi, but his sense of smell doesn't surpass Madarao's. Like Madarao, his sense of smell comes as a weakness against Ayakashi who smell bad. In one episode, he even (politely) refused to help Tokine sniff out the Ayakashi. When it was defeated, he finally let out a sigh of relief. [3]
Regeneration: Like Madarao, if Hakubi takes too much damage or is somehow destroyed, he will automatically return to wherever his main body is stored, and awaken when fully regenerated.[4]
